...all about ASCUS

ASCUS creates a space for those wishing to re-interpret or re-mould the way that individuals and the public engage with art and science. As an organisation we facilitate connections between these two, seemingly disparate, worlds and aim to foster a creative and boundary-pushing dialogue between scientists and artists. As well as supporting the creation of art-science collaborative work we host lectures, workshops and events for anyone with an interest in either discipline, who wishes to see what this exciting fusion of ideas and methods can produce. Our work also spans beyond this to include aiding public engagement with science and innovation through art-science teaching and training. See our website to find out more: www.ascus.org.uk.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

Since 1947, the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) has been a hub for bold, creative and ground-breaking cinema. It has premiered everything from low budget art house to Oscar award winning films.

The artistic aspects of film making are fairly self-evident - where would a film be without fine cinematography or beautiful music? Yet look a little closer and it is clear that as well as playing a crucial role in the technical aspects of film production (which are clearly dependent upon engineering and design) science in its many forms has always inspired cinema. Of course, this is often accompanied by a skewing of the facts that many actual scientists would sniff at. Would superheroes be anywhere near as exciting without their wonderful inventions and sci-fi superpowers? Of course not, but then again, it is not as if high exposure to life threatening radiation actually would allow you to turn into a green mutant whenever you get grumpy. Nor will spider bites alter all of your DNA (sorry). Even so, none of these stories would be anywhere as involving if we could not believe that there was a possibility that these things could be real.

The influence of science in cinema goes beyond the supernatural – many wonderful documentaries, stories and fictional films have been inspired by real lives and discoveries. This year is no exception. The ASCUS team have been given the exciting opportunity to see three films that are inspired by science – fictional and real! We will be considering the science behind the films, how possible it really is, where it ties into real life and what inspired the films in the first place.

So check back in to read up on ‘Black Box 3: Matter and Metamorphosis’, ‘Hawking’, and ‘Frankenstein’s Army’. From detailing real-life experiments, discovering the life of one of today's most celebrated scientists, and a horror film with a concept to make your mind (and stomach) spin, there will be something to interest everyone. Even if that all sounds a little high-brow, can you honestly say you've never wondered if zombies were really viable? You know where to find out . . .
